Windows operating system is the most prevalent computer operating system interface on the campus and the world. As the most prevalent, it is therefore one the most targeted of all the operating systems on personal desktops. To protect windows computers, Microsoft releases "patches" to the operating system as vulnerabilities are discovered. These are discovered frequently; therefore patches must be installed on a frequent schedule. To assist in this Windows has made the operation of patching a system as easy as possible. The following lists ways to set up automatic patches if your system supports the feature and describes how to manually install them via the update button.
Windows XP Professional

1. Click (Start) button on the taskbar
2. Select Control Panel
3. Double click (System) Icon
4. Select Automatic Updates Tab
5. Put a check mark in the box at the top to "Keep my computer up to date..."
6. Select the button to "Automatically download updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify"

    * Select Every Day and choose a time your computer will be on.
Windows 2000

1. Click button on the taskbar
2. Select Settings
3. Select Control Panel
4. Double Click Automatic Updates
5. Put a check mark in the box at the top to "Keep my computer up to date..."
6. Select the button to "Automatically download updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify"

    * Select Every Day and choose a time your computer will be on.
